Project Global Officer

Project Global Officer (Project GO) is a Department of Defense initiative aimed at improving the language skills, regional expertise, and intercultural communication skills of future military officers. Sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education, Project GO provides institutional grants to U.S institutions of higher education with large ROTC student enrollments, to include the Senior Military Colleges. In turn, these institutions provide language and culture training to ROTC students from across the nation, funding domestic and overseas ROTC language programs and scholarships. Working in support of Army, Air Force, and Navy ROTC Headquarters, Project GO facilitates collaborative efforts both among universities and ROTC leadership.

Since 2007, Project GO institutions have provided over 5,600 domestic and overseas summer scholarships to ROTC students for critical language study. Project GO has strengthened university infrastructure in the critical languages and created venues for communication amongst ROTC leadership and university personnel.

I loved Project Go! I was able to learn a whole new language and culture for 10 weeks! I went to the Dead Sea, Jordan River, Wadi Rum (where they filmed Star Wars) and more! I also became scuba certified. And, I made life long friends who are in other ROTC programs. It was a once in a lifetime experience that wasn’t just all paid for, but actually earned me money. My family was able to visit, which was a nice touch from home. I wasn’t even too homesick because of all the fun I was having. It’s easy to sign up for, and something I would recommend to everyone. All you need to do is research what language you want to learn and location you want to go. You need to fill out a small resume and get a letter of recommendation from your Professor of Military Science. That’s all! It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made within ROTC.

Hamjambo! (Hello all!)

During the summer of my freshman year, I had the opportunity to travel to Tanzania and Kenya through Project Global Officers (PGO). While in East Africa, I learned Swahili from local teachers as well as East African Culture from a James Madison University professor. Through PGO, I was able to travel to some of the most famous places in the world, such as the Serengeti, Lake Victoria, Zanzibar, Chumbe Island, and Ngorogoro Crater. I spent a few nights sleeping on a cow hide in a mud and dung hut with a Massai family that lived near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, but also a few nights at some of the luxury hotels in Nairobi. Some days we were on a bus for 24 hours and some days we were on a private island. This trip was a roller coaster that I would not trade for anything! I made some lifelong connections that I hope to maintain for years to come. Twende twende twende!!! (means Let’s Go, Let’s Go, Let’s Go!!!)

Also, the rhinoceros (pictured) is named Baraka, which means Blessing. He is one of the last two Northern White Rhinos, and is 15 years old. Though he is blind, Baraka enjoyed playing with his human visitors.

Internships

Cadet Abell

At my internship, I had the opportunity to work with the Electronic Proving Ground (EPG) which is part of the Army Testing and Evaluation Command (ATEC) that is located at Fort Huachuca in Arizona. I shadowed the place and learned all about the different developmental tests and their different facilities. This included the Environmental Test Facility (ETF), Antenna Test Facility (ATF), Global Positioning System Test Facility (GPSTF), etc, I was there for 28 days and even helped with some tests, as well. I also attended a couple of Military Intelligence BOLC classes. It was an amazing experience that I am lucky to have. I learned a lot about the Army and the different sides of the Army and what job I could have with my major. Overall, the internship was beneficial for me, and I would sign up for it again!

Cadet Shiveler

At my AMEDD internship I was fortunate to work with a 64A, which is an Army Veterinarian. I shadowed for 28 days following my Cadet Summer Training. This internship involved so many opportunities to see what my career would be like if I became an Army Veterinarian. Some of these opportunities were seeing patients that were either federal working dogs or military working dogs, as well as civilian dogs for those that are active service or veterans. I also was able to go on a food audit to see how they inspect caterers that serve military events. I was also able to take a tour of the Old Guard stables at Fort Myer in Washington D.C. Overall, this internship was a real eye-opener for me as to what a month as a 64A would look like, and I am grateful I was chosen to participate in this amazing opportunity.
