Distinguished Theologian Jurgen Moltmann To Deliver Lecture At FSC

Jürgen Moltmann, widely regarded as the world’s most influential living theologian, will make a return visit to Florida Southern College to deliver the Warren W. Willis Lecture in Religion on October 24.

Dr. Moltmann, emeritus professor of systematic theology at the University of Tübingen in Germany, will deliver the lecture, “On a Culture of Life in the Dangers of this Time,” at 7 p.m. in the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel at FSC. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dr. Moltmann is known for his influential works that emphasize the relationship between suffering and hope, drawing upon his own experience as a prisoner of war during World War II. He is the author of more than 20 books, including Theology of Hope, The Crucified God, and most recently, Ethics of Hope. Dr. Moltmann previously delivered the Willis Lecture at FSC in 1989. On the occasion of this lecture, the college will bestow on him an honorary doctor of divinity degree.

“There is no more distinguished living theologian than Professor Jürgen Moltmann, whose work has not only transformed contemporary theology but also has proved personally inspirational to so many,” said Dr. Waite Willis, professor of religion at FSC. “His message is sure to offer much-needed wisdom for our current situation.”

A long list of distinguished scholars has visited Florida Southern to deliver the Willis Lecture, including historian Martin Marty, theologian Stanley Hauerwas, and biblical scholar John Dominic Crossan. The lecture is made possible by a generous endowment in honor of the late Dr. Warren W. Willis, a longtime leader in youth work in the United Methodist Church.
