Instructor of Nursing

Olsen

As a nurse educator, I believe that teaching is a sacred extension of nursing itself—rooted in compassion, connection, and a deep commitment to human dignity. My teaching philosophy, based off Joanne Duffy’s Quality-Caring Model, centers on the intentional cultivation of caring relationships as the foundation for meaningful learning and professional formation.

Biography

In nursing education, caring is not just a concept—it is a lived experience. I strive to create a learning environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued. By modeling authentic presence, empathy, and respect, I aim to foster a culture of trust that encourages students to explore, question, and grow. I believe that when students experience caring in the classroom, they are more likely to carry that ethos into their clinical practice.

Ultimately, my goal is to prepare nurses who are not only clinically competent but also emotionally intelligent, socially conscious, and deeply committed to the art and science of caring. Through the lens of Duffy’s model, I see nursing education as a transformative journey—one that shapes not just what students know, but who they become.

I have dedicated the past 18 years to the nursing profession, beginning my journey as an Associate Degree Registered Nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). For 12 years, I provided specialized care in the NICU before expanding my scope of practice as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). In 2018, I transitioned into nursing education, where I’ve continued to teach undergraduate students and share my passion for compassionate, evidence-based care.

The first chapter of my nursing career was shaped by life on the move, as I traveled alongside my husband during his 25-year service in the U.S. Army. Since his retirement in 2017, we’ve made Florida our home. Together, we are raising four children—two currently in college, one in high school, and our youngest in middle school.

Committed to lifelong learning and professional growth, I am currently pursuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree along with a certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). My experiences as a clinician, educator, and military spouse have deeply informed my approach to nursing and teaching, reinforcing the importance of resilience, empathy, and holistic care.
